Summary of research and educational activities

My research, based on a combination of controlled environment studies and in situ investigations, is structured around three main approaches:

  • Ecodynamic and biosurvey approach, focusing on the occurrence of cyanotoxins, their bioaccumulation, and trophic transfer in natural environments. We also assess the relevance of using sentinel organisms, specifically filter-feeding bivalves, as bioindicators for the presence of cyanotoxins in freshwater and estuarine environments.
  • Environment-health approach, involving the development of methods for quantifying cyanotoxins (both free and protein-bound forms) in organisms consumed by humans. This approach is complemented by environmental diagnostics carried out in collaboration with managers of water bodies contaminated by cyanobacteria and used for recreational purposes (swimming, fishing) or drinking water supply.
  • Ecotoxicological approach, aimed at assessing structural and functional disruptions caused by cyanotoxins as well as emerging cyanopeptids in organisms. After conducting targeted ecotoxicological studies on invertebrates (bivalves and gastropods) and vertebrates (fish), I am now focusing on the use of metabolomics tools for an untargeted approach to characterize the effects of cyanotoxins and emerging cyanopeptids on the metabolism of aquatic organisms.
