Summary of research and educational activities

My project, titled ValvoSurv, investigates how zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) respond both behaviourally and molecularly when exposed to pharmaceuticals and personal care products. These substances, classified as Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs), are increasingly detected in aquatic ecosystems and are considered pseudopersistent due to their continuous input and resistance to degradation.

My study focuses on using non-invasive videography techniques to monitor the mussel valve movements and to identify behavioural modulations under contaminant stress. These behavioural patterns are then linked to molecular responses through targeted proteomic analysis of haemolymph, gills, and digestive glands. This approach helps confirm whether the observed behaviours are indeed stress responses. By identifying protein biomarkers associated with stress, the project contributes to a deeper understanding of zebra mussel behaviour and their potential in further development.
